Ah the good old soil colour charts. Good information for ther detectorist as well so you have an idea what types of soil you are digging into and more important to be able to distinguish sub soil from topsoil and natural. Pity the link is a US one as the soils in the UK are very much different though it is good for a general appreciation of the topic.

Thanks for that mate, it was very useful. These are the things that we all should know about I think. I'm finding that understanding the ground is far more important than I had expected - even with my entry-level machine (Ace 250). But, right, a similar thing about UK soil is what we want. I'll let you know if I find anything.
